| Alan Davie at 90 - 26 June 2010 to 16 October 2010 |
| Alan Davie was born in Grangemouth in 1920 and studied at Edinburgh College of Art in the late 1930’s. Consistently named as one of Scotland’s most prolific living artists, he is, for many, one of the most important British painters of the post-war decades. As a celebration of Davie’s life and work as he approaches his 90th birthday, Falkirk Council presents an exhibition of his recent work at the Park Gallery, Callendar House. This will be the first exhibition in the Park Gallery’s new location within Callendar House, and to give visitors the opportunity to see as many of the painter’s recent works as possible, the show will be presented in two parts. The exhibition will open on the 26th June, with a new selection of work on display in the gallery from the 4th September. Alan Davie at 90 will be supported by a programme of talks and events, including a personal account of working with Davie by Kip Gresham of The Print Studio, Cambridge, who was for many years has provided the technical expertise to help him realise his ideas; and a unique gig at the Falkirk Wheel by NeWt, introduced by Peter Nelson, Professor of Music and Technology at Edinburgh University, acknowledging Davie’s reputation as an accomplished jazz musician. Admission to the Park Gallery, Callendar House is free and the venue is open Monday to Saturday from 10am-5pm and on Sundays until the end of September, from 2pm to 5pm. Is it right that anyone should be judged entirely by their past? In 1895, such questions caused a sensation; with new questions about political integrity now dominating our own age, this elegant, stylish work retains a surprisingly sharp contemporary resonance. |
