Historic Scotland Walks on the Wild Side - 01 February 2008 to 31 December 2008
Guided tours lead by Historic Scotland’s expert guides are back by popular demand. The Orkney World Heritage Site Ranger Service are offering free guided walks around the Ring of Brodgar, a stunning circle of upright standing stones dating to the Neolithic period, situated just five miles north-east of Stenness.

In 2007 nearly 1,700 visitors enjoyed tours from our Rangers Sandra Miller and Elaine Clarke, compared with 1,200 in 2006, and this year people of all ages will have the opportunity to attend walks every Thursday at 13.00. On the tour visitors will have the chance to uncover the history behind the people who created the Ring of Brodgar, the reasons for its creation and what it was used for.

Sandra Miller, Ranger at Historic Scotland, said;

‘Visiting the Ring of Brodgar is a quite a special experience: the history of the site and its surroundings give it real atmosphere and the stories behind it really bring it to life. It’s been so rewarding to see the growing popularity of our guided walks and we are looking forward to welcoming more people in 2008.’

No advance booking is required for these guided tours, although visitors are advised to wear appropriate outdoor clothing. There are guided walks every Thursday February to May, September to December, and every day during June, July and August.

PFT Season Opens with Wild Honey by Michael Frayn, from the play without a name by Anton Chekhov - 16 May 2008 to 18 October 2008
When the young Chekhov completed his first play, he cannot have anticipated that a century later, it would be given a dazzling makeover by the author of Noises Off - nor that his youthful musings would be turned into a sharp, wildly funny midsummer comedy of love, lust and locomotives!

The party to celebrate the return of Anna Petrovna to her late husband’s country estate attracts a motley crew: friends, acquaintances, creditors . . . and suitors. From doctors to retired Colonels, landowners to horse thieves and merchants to Female Emancipationists, all walks of country life gather - including the local schoolmaster, Platonov.

Once a radical student destined to become “a second Byron”, Platonov appears to have settled for a dull married life in the country. But Platanov’s seductive charm and ready wit are undiminished, a combination which can be highly attractive - and very dangerous.

As the alcohol flows and fireworks burst in the night sky, the bees begin to gather round the honey pots. And while Anna Petrovna fends off would-be husbands, Platonov is juggling four women, fighting off a legal action (and a galloping case of the DTs) and evading a murder attempt or two . . .

Hurtling from farce in the forest to a steam-driven finale, Pitlochry Festival Theatre open their 2008 Season in high style with the Scottish première of Michael Frayn’s effervescent 1984 comedy.

This is the 1st play in PFT summer season. It opens this Friday May 16th, 8pm and will play in repertoire until 18th October. Tickets are available from box office: 01796 484626 or online: www.pitlochry.org.uk

Extremes: Life in Subarctic Canada - 16 May 2008 to 19 October 2008
Extremes: Life in Subarctic Canada
National Museum of Scotland
Fri 16 May–Sun 19 Oct
Free

Experience the lives of one of Canada’s indigenous communities and discover some of Scotland and Canada’s shared history. In the 1850s and 60s Scottish fur traders collected beautifully-crafted objects from the Dene peoples living in the Canadian subarctic. Now part of National Museums Scotland’s collection, these objects provide a fascinating insight into a living community.

Extremes: Life in Subarctic Canada is the result of a new relationship National Museums Scotland has built with the descendents of the people who traded with the Scots, in particular the Dogrib Dene, or Tlicho, in their own language. The objects are returning to Scotland from Canada where they have been on display, along with contemporary material purchased from the Dene people for our collections.

Find out how the objects came to the museum. Admire their beauty, skill and workmanship. Experience personal stories from the community. Discover the extremes of the subarctic environment. What was it like to live here 150 years ago and how is it different today?

She Stoops To Conquer By Oliver Goldsmith - 22 May 2008 to 16 October 2008
Following hotly on the heels of opening night at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, PFT is delighted to announce it’s 2nd play in it’s Summer repertoire – She Stoops To Conquer, directed by Richard Baron

Mrs. Hardcastle is determined to marry her decidedly spoiled son from her first marriage, Tony Lumpkin, to her glamorous niece, Constance Neville – if only to keep the fabulous Neville jewels in the family. Constance, however, has other plans . . . which tend to involve the dashing George Hastings . . .

Likewise, Squire Hardcastle has arranged a match for his daughter, Kate, with the son of his old friend, Sir Charles Marlow. Neither the Hardcastle’s nor the bridegroom-to-be have ever met - so the Squire has no way of knowing that while young Marlow is hopelessly bashful in the presence of society ladies, he becomes a veritable Casanova at the sight of a serving wench . . .

Marlow invites Hastings to accompany him to Liberty Hall, the Squire’s country house. When the young bucks stop at a rowdy alehouse seeking directions, a well-oiled Tony Lumpkin decides that fun is to be had. Telling the visitors they can find rooms for the night at a nearby inn, complete with grumpy landlord and gorgeous barmaid, he directs them to . . . Liberty Hall, their intended destination . . .

With its outrageous mix of secret elopements and nocturnal confusions, Goldsmith’s classic comedy has delighted audiences for over two centuries. A ribald and hilarious portrait of life and love in town and country, this promises to be a season highlight!

She Stoops To Conquer opens on Thursday 22nd May (2pm and 8pm) and will play in repertoire until 16th October. Tickets are available from box office: 01796 484626 or go online: www.pitlochry.org.uk.

DISCOVER THE MYSTERIES OF MAESHOWE - 01 June 2008 to 31 August 2008
New for 2008, Historic Scotland is introducing special twilight tours at one of the finest Neolithic sites in Europe. From 1 June to 31 August tours will be available every day at 18.00, 19.00 and 20.00 taking in the beauty, tranquillity and mystery at Maeshowe Chambered Cairn.

A prominent feature on the landscape the Neolithic tomb of Maeshowe is older than the pyramids, and the great cairn, with its elaborate stone passageway and chambers, is the finest in north-west Europe. At the evening tours, visitors can experience the magical changes of light and the stillness of nightfall in the Heart of Neolithic Orkney.

Alan Jones, Monument Manager at Maeshowe, said:

“Our daytime tours at Maeshowe are very popular, and we were keen to offer visitors something a little bit different this year. On these tours visitors can admire the remarkable skills taken to create such a sophisticated monument with simple tools and see the incredible collection of runic inscriptions and engravings, all by twilight. It promises to be a very atmospheric experience.”

All tours must be pre-paid and booked in advance by calling 01856 761 606 or in person at Tormiston Mill, Maeshowe’s visitor centre. Tours are adults £5.20, children £2.60 and concessions £4.20.

Visitors are advised that they should arrive 15 minutes before their tour. Each tour lasts around 20 minutes.

Arcadia by Tom Stoppard to open as fourth play in Pitlochry Season. - 05 June 2008 to 20 October 2008
1809: momentous events occur one weekend at Sidley Park, Lady Croom’s stately home. Lord Byron is a house guest. The beautiful gardens are being turned into Gothic chaos by landscape gardener Culpability Noakes. Teenage prodigy Thomasina (Lady Croom’s daughter) invents the second law of thermodynamics, to the surprise of her tutor, the rakish Septimus Hodge. And discovering that someone has been interfering with his wife in the gazebo, poet Ezra Chater sends for pistols – and disappears from history…

2008: ambitious academic Bernard Nightingale visits Sidley Park looking for evidence to support his theory about what really happened that fateful weekend - a theory which could make his fortune. Forming an uneasy alliance with writer Hannah Jarvis, who is researching a history of the gardens, and Valentine Coverley, a spiky mathematics student (and direct descendant of Lady Croom), Bernard attempts to piece together the mysterious events of 1809…

Two worlds, two centuries apart, edge closer and closer together, until past and present collide. And finally, the truth is revealed…

A detective story, a historical romance, an ode to the art of landscape gardening and a comic celebration of human desire, Arcadia is a modern masterpiece: funny, intelligent, audacious and deeply moving. Winner of the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best New Play in 1994, PFT is delighted to be staging the Scottish première production.

Arcadia opens Thursday, 5th June (2pm & 8pm) at Pitlochry Festival Theatre and plays in repertoire until October 20th. Tickets are available from box office: 01796 484626 or go online: www.pitlochry.org.uk.

A life of fashion - 28 June 2008 to 18 October 2008
Prêt-a-Porter: Callendar House, Falkirk at 1p.m., Saturday June 28 until October 18, 2008

The fashion of the 1950s and 60s comes to Callendar House this summer through the unique collection of former air stewardess Ailsa Porter.

Mrs Porter, who now lives in Stirlingshire, travelled the world for two decades as an air stewardess. She had a great interest in fashion and collected a wardrobe which reflected her glamorous, international lifestyle.

She generously donated her 1950s and 60s collection to Falkirk Council’s Museums Service and her wardrobe will be shown in “Prêt-a-Porter” at Callendar House from June 28 to October 18.

The exhibition begins with clothes from the spring and summer collection and will be refreshed on August 31 with items form the autumn and winter wear in Mrs Porter’s wardrobe.

Running alongside Prêt-a-Porter will be “How do I look in this? ” at the Park Gallery in which artists Susan Cutts and Julia Douglas will address contemporary issues of personal expression, fashion and body adornment, and explore the idea that the objects we accumulate are statements of personalities.

“Ailsa Porter’s very generous donation means that our museums service now has a wonderful textile collection which records and preserves fashion history for this and future generations, “ said Councillor Adrian Mahoney, Falkirk Council’s Convener of Environment and Heritage.

Prêt a Porter runs in the Large Gallery, Callendar House from the 28th June – 18th October 2008. How do I look in this? runs from 28th June – 27th July 2008. Admission to Callendar House, the Park Gallery and the exhibitions is all free.

Go Ape at Sensation this Summer - 01 July 2008 to 31 October 2008
This summer, Sensation Science Centre in Dundee will be a hive of ape-themed activity with the arrival of the stunning new interactive touring exhibition Great Apes – How great are you?

Visitors will become explorers as they try out a fun mix of hands-on exhibits, multimedia displays and play areas, to discover how similar we are to our ape relatives. The exhibition is split into four main themes including a thought-provoking journey through ape species, ape behaviour, current threats and conservation initiatives.

In the ‘Meet the Family’ section, explorers will be greeted by the hoots and calls of our ape cousins, as they discover just how closely we are related to apes. A portrait gallery introduces each member of the family allowing visitors to put themselves in the frame by looking in the mirror and completing the fifth and final member of the great ape family - humans. Using an interactive map, people will be able to find out where all the ape species live, catch some ape-antics on a video screen and handle replica skulls and bronze casts.

Great Apes was created by At-Bristol in conjunction with GRASP (UNEP/UNESCO’s Great Apes Survival Project). Outlying Islands by David Greig- the final play to open in Pitlochry’s Summer Season - 20 August 2008 to 16 October 2008
On the eve of the Second World War, two fresh-faced Cambridge ornithologists, are sent by the government to survey the bird population on a remote, uninhabited Scottish island. Left alone for a month on this scrap of rock with the authoritarian Kirk, the island’s leaseholder, and his niece Ellen, a young woman in thrall to the stars of the silver screen, they begin to study the birds. And each other.

Initially full of enthusiasm for their task, the two young man are appalled when they discover the real reason for the government’s interest in the island - an interest that would see the island turned to dead, desolate rock.

But not so Kirk, who sees in the Ministry’s plans only an opportunity for compensation and escape - escape from a lifetime’s work tending the grazing sheep and the seasonal harvest of cliff-top birds, escape from a place which has a dark pagan history. A history which seems to resonate strongly with the free-spirited Ellen.

As the petrels and fulmars whirl around the cliff tops, unaware that their future hangs by a thread, tensions build inside the ruined chapel that houses the expedition. To the point where something has to give . . .

Poetic, intense and gripping, Outlying Islands is a glimpse of an innocence, a way of seeing and of being young, that is about to be destroyed forever.

Outlying Islands opens on Wednesday 20th August and plays in repertoire until October 16th. Tickets are available from Pitlochry Festival Theatre box office: 01796 484626 or go online: www.pitlochry.org.uk
