KEY PURPOSE
To ensure that the garden and related policies of Brodick Castle Garden and Estate are managed and maintained as a nationally-recognized garden of outstanding historical and horticultural importance; contributing to the property’s overall conservation and development, and its enjoyment by visitors and supporters.

The role of ‘Gardener’ as a key member of the Brodick Castle team will be heavily involved in the development plans of the garden and wider designed landscape, with future projects aimed at creating gardens of international significance. Hence this post will be vital to realize this ambition of the gardens as a top visitor attraction. This post is likely to include frequent work in the woodland garden.

CONTEXT
The garden comprises a listed walled garden containing an impressive collection of tender plants that may be grown due to the effect of the Gulf Stream. It also features a large woodland garden containing a world class collection of Rhododendrons and plants from temperate regions of the world.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Key Purposes of the job will be met by:
1. Undertaking practical maintenance of the garden (e.g. managing trees and shrubs, herbaceous plants, and bulbs; turf care; pest/disease/weed control; staking, plant nutrition, composting and soil improvement to the required standards expected by the Trust and for the maximum safety of, and enjoyment by visitors including other professionals in the horticultural industry;
2. Fostering positive relationships with local communities and organisations and promote the work of the Trust.
3. On occasion, supervising and working with volunteers and/or staff members to ensure they deliver required outputs at the appropriate standard, and gain benefit/satisfaction from their activities;

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE
Qualifications
• A formal qualification at NVQ/ SVQ Level 2 in amenity horticulture supported by knowledge and demonstrable work experience in an amenity garden context.
• PA1 and PA6a spraying certificates, or willingness to be trained in the use of pesticides and to exercise that training.
• Current driving licence valid for driving in the UK.

THE ROLE

We are seeking to appoint an exceptional and experienced Estates Capital Programme and Project Manager (M&E) to join our Estates team, who will lead on developing our rolling
10-year investment/capital plan and in the delivery of assigned capital projects. You will take the technical lead on the Building Services programme and project needs, working closely with the Head of Estates on the overall asset management plan and estates strategy for the NGS estate, which includes 5 historical listed buildings.

This is an exciting time for you to join our team while we design and implement our new asset management methodologies to develop a robust estate strategy and capital investment plan across our estate, while faced with the challenges of listed buildings and ensuring minimum disruption to our galleries for our visitors. It is envisaged the capital programme investment over the next 10 years will be in the region of £25M – £35M for ongoing lifecycle investment needs, within the backdrop of a major capital works project to build a new National Collection Facility (The Art Works) which is currently in design development. The majority of the investment programme is in lifecycle replacement of building services systems, alongside listed building conservation works to the external fabric.

Main duties and responsibilities:

You will be responsible for developing and delivery of the NGS Investment plan programme and assigned estates capital projects, as the technical lead on building services and infrastructure projects.

Programme development and management

You will have the overall responsibility for capital planning, including development of an efficient and co-ordinated programme aligning with strategic objectives and the public programme. The capital programme needs to take into account lifecycle replacement requirements, critical systems, risk and mitigation plans together with funding availability.

Responsible for the development of the asset management plan, capital programme and investment plan, taking the technical lead on building services (Mechanical, electrical, fire, security, BMS, data/comms infrastructure) and working closely with surveying colleagues on the building fabric programme to ensure we have an efficient and optimum works programme.

Duties will also include:
• Asset Strategy – review and evaluation of estate performance in terms of condition, statutory compliance and operational needs for Building Services (Mechanical, Electrical, Fire, Security, BMS, network infrastructure) aligning with the estates strategy, identifying lifecycle investment needs to inform capital plan and funding needs over the next 10 years. This to include our Carbon Net zero pathway development to align with building services lifecycle replacement needs to secure optimum investment plan.
• Development of a co-ordinated and efficient capital works programme for M&E works, aligning and co-ordinating where appropriate with building fabric projects and the estates strategy. Capital plan to be developed for short (annual), medium (3 to 5 years) and long term (10 years), balancing funding restrictions and risks, alongside funding opportunities and business case development. Critical to the development of the capital plan will be working closely with colleagues on the public programme, clearly identifying disruptive works and where operational areas will be impacted, securing appropriate closure times around and into exhibition programmes.
• Scoping, brief development and commissioning feasibility studies and options appraisals, ensuring clear functional needs are identified and appropriate technical solutions are secured and explored.
• Developing and implementing an appropriate procurement and contract strategy to align with the capital programme needs, ensuring efficient and effective procurement of consultants and contractors.
• Commissioning design teams and consultants for the delivery of projects
• Ensuring BIM/Asset information is considered in projects, ensuring up to date information is retained.

This is a fast-paced role promoting V&A Dundee’s exhibitions and activities, with wide scope for a media professional to devise and deliver creative media campaigns, collaborating with curators, designers and other experts.

The Media Officer will help build profile and understanding of V&A Dundee, as well as engaging audiences and driving visits to the museum, exhibitions and events. The role also supports filming and location activity, supporting both profile and income generation.

JOB PURPOSE

This role will establish and deliver the pilot of a new schools programme at Pollok House, Glasgow, liaising with the programme developers, property colleagues, and teachers/schools. As well as the delivery of the pilot, the role plays an important part in evaluating the programme and creating practical operational guidance that may be used by other properties when delivering the programme in future roll-outs.

CONTEXT

At the National Trust for Scotland, we recognise the importance that learning and engagement plays in adding value to our properties. The provision of an engaging and interesting day out for schools has been a key feature at Pollok House for many years, and we’re ready to pilot a new, innovative primary schools programme here. This new programme will involve digital resources, an outreach Theatre in Education show, on-site workshops and new ways of engaging with the site in line with the Curriculum for Excellence.

Pollok House is Glasgow’s “country house” and is a fantastic place to soak up the atmosphere of Scotland’s history. With its beautiful gardens, popular park café, famous art collection, busy functions business and events programme, Pollok House is a popular family-friendly visitor attraction in Scotland’s largest city. Pollok House boasts a range of private dining and entertainment space, as well as one of the most impressive interiors that oozes history and character, making it ideal for weddings, corporate events and functions. With the reopening of The Burrell Collection, Pollok Country Park is developing as a major cultural destination as well as building strong links to its local communities. Pollok House is keen to explore how National Trust for Scotland best engages with the people of Glasgow, with an ambitious exhibition series and cultural outreach programme underway, of which our approach to schools and learning will play a central role.

This new schools project aims to engage up to eight local schools over the next 12 months, leading to long term relationships and visiting habits being formed, plus new engagement techniques being trialed and evaluated before they are rolled out to other venues. The outcomes of the pilot will inform practice across National Trust for Scotland.

The delivery of this pilot will run in parallel with existing educational/schools provision, and these existing arrangements are not part of this role’s remit.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

In this role the post holder will:

• Liaise with the programme development team of creators, contractors, and suppliers to understand the programme’s products and liaise with Pollok’s staff to enable the delivery of the programme;
• Form, build, and maintain relationships with the schools participating in the programme so that they understand what is offered, the potential for satisfying elements of the Curriculum for Excellence, and their role as participants;
• Make all the logistical arrangements for the outreach theatre elements to visit participating schools
• Make all the logistical/operational arrangements for participating schools when at Pollok – including setting-up equipment and props, timings, cloakroom/lunch facilities etc;
• Plan and deliver schools sessions, working with external contractors, staff and volunteers, both in school and on-site, embedding new digital resources as they are developed;
• Maintain detailed records of participating schools contacts and visits;
• Contribute to and collate the evaluation of the programme from all perspectives: participating schools, Pollok staff, contractors/suppliers, creative consultants;
• Create other resources, guidelines and plans as required to ensure pilot programme meets the needs of the schools involved, and document the organization and delivery of the programme into an “operational manual” that can serve as a guide to future properties considering adopting the programme;
• Ensure that historic spaces are used appropriately and in accordance with conservation principles
• Ensure Safe Systems of Work (H&S) are implemented effectively within all activities undertaken and with any external contractors.

JOB PURPOSE

The Assistant Printer role exists to provide support to the Robert Smail’s team in carrying out the day-to-day work to keep Smail’s as an operational jobbing Letterpress Printers today and for the future. The role includes the practical application, demonstration and communication of these unique, traditional skills to a visiting public whilst supporting the preservation of the craft of letterpress printing in the wider context of the conservation principles of the National Trust for Scotland.

It continues to add to the legacy left by three generations of the Smail family and contributes significantly to the town of Innerleithen, through the continuing functions of the business. It is one of only four industrial heritage sites held within the NTS and as such is an important part of the Trust’s portfolio, showing the organization’s commitment to conserving a diverse and varied sample of Scotland’s heritage.

Its active visitor experience, and the people who deliver it, are the property’s greatest strength. The Property is currently open for tours four days per week during the visitor season (April until October). The tour is guided in three sections: Office, Caseroom and Machine Room of which the Assistant Printer takes an active role. The retail shop is also open in the run up to Christmas. Commercial printing work, an important income stream, is undertaken all year round. Workshops and conservation work are progressed during the closed season.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

People
 The Assistant Printer will be directly responsible to the Printer, but also report to the VSS in relation to the VE, Education, Outreach etc.
 The role has no line management responsibility however there is a need to liaise and work closely with other property staff, volunteers as well as NTS support staff, customers and visitors to the property. They will supervise young people on educational visits.

Daily Operations
 Assist with the maintenance, cleaning and operation of printing related machinery and equipment. Follow property opening and closing procedures as per property guidelines.
 To run, work and help maintain all of the property’s presses (Arab Treadle Platen, Wharfedale Reliance, Original Heidelberg and Conqueror Guillotine) to the highest standards.
 To lead the Machine room section of the visitor tour during the open season by confidently communicating the process of letterpress printing, the role of the printer and their historical context to audiences of varying age and ability.
 To balance the demands of both visitors and jobbing work by giving realistic ideas of timescales to meet deadlines for jobbing work, property needs, and NTS requests.
 Be a keyholder and have occasional duty management responsibilities.
 To cover other areas of the property (tours/shop) for breaks etc.

JOB PURPOSE
National Trust for Scotland (NTS) is embarking on an ambitious review of the content of our corporate archive, the service delivery model, and the long-term storage of the archive. The NTS archives include collections currently held at a number of properties and offices across Scotland, as well as Hermiston Quay, the NTS headquarters building. This new role is part of a dedicated project team working closely with the NTS Archivist to support an ambitious programme of work.

The Review Archivist will lead on a programme to review the National Trust for Scotland’s physical corporate and historic property archive collections. You will develop a methodology which will identify and collect information on the significance of collections, providing data that will support future planning of the care, exploitation, and development of archive collections. Working with the Programme Manager, external consultants, and the Digital Archivist, you will have the chance to lead this critical strand of the wider programme. This work will be undertaken in liaison with the NTS Archivist, who will continue to manage the archive. To achieve this, you will develop opportunities to promote the Archive Service and engage with a range of internal stakeholders with the programme. The post-holder may also be expected to supervise the work of an Archive Review Assistant later in the programme.

As part of the wider development programme for the Archive Service, the Review Archivist will also contribute to the development of strategy for the service, investigations of new storage, and support a programme of digital preservation. This role provides an unrivalled opportunity to learn about and improve the management of the collections in historic properties across the country.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Responsible for the development of the archives review programme/survey, working with colleagues and external consultants to develop a comprehensive understanding of NTS collections.
• Deliver the physical archives review programme/survey, working with colleagues to collect data on NTS archive collections across all sites.
• Survey archive collections held in NTS historic properties and headquarters.
• Develop an understanding of the significance of NTS collections, enabling future planning of the archive service.
• Analyse the results of the review and provide regular updates and data to the wider Archive Programme team and other internal and external stakeholders.
• Liaise with the NTS Archivist to develop an understanding of the history of NTS and the corporate and historic collections, to ensure that the survey is effective.
• Liaise with the Digital Archivist in undertaking the programme of activities relating to born-digital archives to create a collections framework, applicable across the whole of NTS, for paper and digital material that has been identified for permanent preservation.
• Participate in strategic developments for the NTS Archive Service by providing data and contributing information and knowledge.
• Support the NTS on best practice in archives and records management.
• Advocate for, and engage with internal and external stakeholders about, archives and managing records.
• Direct and manage the work of the Archives Review Assistant, should the post be required.
