You will be working at Fort George, one of the most outstanding fortifications in Europe. It was built in the wake of the Battle of Culloden (1746) as a secure base for King George II’s army. Spread over 42 acres the site remains a working barracks and home to the Black Watch.

Your role of Steward at Historic Environment Scotland will be a seasonal position up until 30th September. There are two positions available. The role is scheduled to begin on 1st June 2025 and end on 31st August 2025.

Based at Balvenie Castle, you will prepare the site for visitors each day and welcome visitors to the site during the summer season. Assisting visitors with information and the most suitable tickets and products, you will make sure they have the best possible experience of this busy site with a rich history.

The wide variety of visitors to Balvenie Castle makes this an interesting and varied role, and the continuing increase in visitor numbers makes this an important site within the district.

You may also be asked to work at Huntly Castle, 15 miles away, from time to time—no more than once a month. Travel expenses will be paid for this and all other work travel.

Based at Kildrummy Castle, you will prepare the site for visitors each day and welcome visitors to the site during the summer season. The wide variety of visitors to Kildrummy Castle makes this an interesting and varied role, with the opportunity to give guided tours to small groups of appreciative visitors.

You may also be asked to work from time to time – no more than once a month – at Corgarff Castle, 20 miles away. Travel expenses will be paid for this and all other work travel.

Tolquhon Castle is a charming historic site nestled in rolling farmland near Tarves and Pitmedden. The Mobility Driving Team aims to welcome and deliver a world class service to every visitor. All duties within the team involve working with people, and teamwork is crucial to our success. This role incudes both driving the car and acting as banksman on a rotating basis and involves working outside in all weathers. When the car is not required, members of the team assist with providing general information for visitors inside Edinburgh Castle, providing information on other sites within the estate and are also able to promote other services such as the benefits of membership and explorer passes.

The post-holder will have a strong focus on visitor engagement, landscape protection and nature conservation, and will be expected to set exemplary standards. There will be opportunities to assist in the delivery and development of learning, community and volunteer engagement.

Holyrood Park offers excellent scope for our Ranger Service staff to enjoy the outdoors. This unique and popular site has a fascinating story and our team offers many captivating interpretations for our audiences’ enhanced understanding, appreciation and pleasure.
