This is a fast-paced role promoting V&A Dundee’s exhibitions and activities, with wide scope for a media professional to devise and deliver creative media campaigns, collaborating with curators, designers and other experts.
The Media Officer will help build profile and understanding of V&A Dundee, as well as engaging audiences and driving visits to the museum, exhibitions and events. The role also supports filming and location activity, supporting both profile and income generation.
This would suit a candidate with experience of media relations, working in the media, or both.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop and implement media and communication strategies which build V&A Dundee’s profile internationally, communicating to audiences, stakeholders and funders and creating better awareness of our collections, expertise, design heritage and innovation.
Research, write and issue press releases, media articles and other communications as appropriate working with senior colleagues to approve key messages.
Identify, plan and implement high impact and effective media events, briefings and photo/film opportunities which support V&A Dundee’s strategic objectives.
Develop, pitch and place features, news, comment and visual storytelling ideas as well as media partnership proposals.
Work with the Director of Audiences & Media and the Communications and Media Manager to develop and implement communication strategies which deliver to the organisation’s strategic business plan objectives.
Contribute to the press office service, helping protect Design Dundee Limited/V&A Dundee’s reputation through proactive media activity and crisis management.
Liaise with the media for both proactive PR and issues management, acting as a spokesperson. On a daily basis, determine lines to take on media enquiries, consulting with stakeholders as required.
Help deliver integrated Audiences and Media campaigns driving engagement and visits to the museum, exhibitions, events and the online offer, including within the team taking a lead on appropriate campaigns and projects.
Work with the Communications and Media Manager to develop external relationships with broadcasters and independent production companies, with a view to securing major filming opportunities about the museum, supporting the strategic aim of high-profile publicity and commercial sustainability.
Work with the Communications and Media Manager to develop external relationships with film and TV production companies seeking commercial hire of V&A Dundee as a location, liaising with location managers, producers and directors, and ensuring their production requirements are considered in collaboration with internal and external representatives: Screen Scotland, TayScreen, Creative Scotland, VisitScotland, Visitor Operations and Exhibitions.
Work with the Communications and Media Manager to manage filming opportunities on behalf of V&A Dundee and in collaboration with partners.
Develop content to be used and adapted by other members of the Audience and Media team, including digital and marketing, working with other departments to develop audience-focused messaging.
Manage external suppliers such as PR agencies, freelancers, copywriters, content contributors, film producers and photographers to help deliver the department’s communications objectives.
Deputise for the Communications and Media Manager, including managing any media risk or crisis and providing advice to senior management and the board.
Be available out-of-hours in emergencies or to respond to urgent enquiries on an occasional basis.

Personal Specification Essential:
Experience of media relations or working in the media.
Excellent writing and editorial skills.
Understanding of the media at a local, specialist, national and international level.
Experience of developing and delivering media communications plans.
Skills in preparing compelling materials and statements for the media as well as a range of other audiences.
Ability to communicate with credibility and authority, presenting a compelling point of view.
An ability to work confidentially, handling sensitive information
An ability to act as a spokesperson for the organisation when required.
Ability to advise staff and senior management, especially over sensitive media or confidential issues.
A good influencer, able to communicate with credibility presenting a compelling point of view.

Desirable:
Knowledge of PR and media communications in cultural environments and enabling marketing, learning, access, income generation and fundraising.
Knowledge of communications for specialist audiences in learning or business environments.
Understanding of web and social media channels as communications tools and evidence of creative integration with traditional media.
