Here at Historic Environment Scotland, we are recruiting for a Roving Steward for a fixed term contract. The likely start date for this role is 1 July 2024 with an end date of 30 November 2024.

This is an exciting opportunity to work for the lead body responsible for the historic environment in Scotland. Your role of Steward sits within the Central East district, you will be actively involved in work which supports providing the best experience for our visitors – ranging from: greeting our visitors, carrying out cleaning and grounds maintenance duties, selling admission tickets or processing online bookings, selling our range of retail products or outlining the history of the site to our diverse visitor base. You will be part of a team of stewards working in a monument, covering all the sites mentioned, helping with pre-arranged visits to Claypotts Castle led by a Monument Manager.

We are looking for someone who enjoys interacting with diverse groups of people, who has a passion for customer service and who would thrive in a fast paced and constantly changing workplace.

You will work a rota which will involve working 5 days across the sites, with Arbroath Abbey being your main base. This Post will involve working weekends and public holidays.

Thank you for your interest in the post of Apprentice Gardener – Edzell Castle with Historic Environment Scotland, based at Edzell Castle, Edzell, DD9 7UE. This is a four-year fixed term and pensionable appointment.

The Edzell Castle monument conservation unit consists of one full time Gardener who is responsible for the upkeep of the walled garden and the grounds around the Castle. The Gardener is managed by the Works Manager at Arbroath Abbey where there are three Stonemasons and one Gardener. You may be asked to work at both Edzell Castle and Arbroath Abbey from time to time. As part of your apprenticeship, you will be expected to spend time away from your normal place of work or on college placements and through relevant work placements across Scotland – please note that work placements may mean spending time away from home.

You will undergo a four-year apprenticeship and attend Dundee and Angus College once a week at Kingsway Campus, Old Glamis Road, Dundee, DD3 8LE at where you will learn all aspects of horticulture and grounds maintenance within a historic landscape.
• Attend college and gain Horticulture SVQ at SCQF Level 5.
• Assist the Gardeners and learn about the maintenance of the formal garden at Edzell Castle. This will include weeding, planting, mulching and the propagation of plants utilising the onsite greenhouse.
• You will be expected to study the various plants that are grown and recognise them to have the ability to pass on the information to anyone who enquires.
• Assist in the maintenance of the fine lawns, undertaking mowing, scarifying, aerating, application of herbicides and fertilisers.
• Use and maintain tools, equipment and machinery such as petrol driven ride-on mowers, pedestrian mowers, strimmer’s and hedge cutters.

Thank you for your interest in the post of Plumber with Historic Environment Scotland, based at Edinburgh Castle within the Edinburgh Region. This is a permanent and pensionable appointment.

You will help ensure the day-to-day maintenance of hot and cold-water services within the Edinburgh Region, carry out maintenance on drainage, rhones and cast-iron systems and daily checks of public toilets prior to opening. The applicant will be an integral part of the Monument Conservation Unit (MCU) Team, who deliver the annual programme of works and provide support to the Visitor & Community Team ensuring that Edinburgh Regions buildings are maintained to a five-star level.

This is an exciting opportunity to take on a leadership role at one of our busiest sites. Glasgow Cathedral is the most complete medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland- built in the 1100s, the Cathedral drew countless pilgrims to the shrine of St Mungo. Today, the Cathedral receives almost 500,000 visitors per year, and is situated within the historic precinct- operating closely alongside a host of other heritage attractions.

The post holder will be responsible for managing a team of 10+ stewards to deliver the highest standards of visitor experience at Glasgow Cathedral – working across all areas, including in the shop and welcome space with delivery of an outstanding visitor experience forming a core part of the role. The post holder will also be the on-site face of HES, and the ability to build positive working relationships with Church of Scotland and other partners will be critical.

WARDEN AND ASSISTANT WARDEN POSTS – BLUE-GREEN NETWORK PARTNERSHIP PROJECT

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Mugdock Country Park team, for a full time Warden and 2 full time Assistant Warden posts. The posts will form part of a project team for the Blue-Green Network Partnership Project between EDC and Scottish Water and will be based at Mugdock but will work mainly within the Milngavie Reservoir site.

Responsibilities include providing clear access routes around Milngavie Reservoirs by addressing drainage issues, vegetation growth and landscape presentation. Tasks will involve maintenance of trees, land, paths and cleaning of structures to create an attractive environment and preserve fixed assets.

Applicants should have a knowledge of estates management, working on listed structures, planned maintenance, responsive repairs and an understanding of issues relating to public access.

The posts are 37 hours per week. Normal hours of work will be 0900 to 1730 although evening and weekend working will be required.

We’re at the forefront of researching and understanding the historic environment and addressing the impact of climate change on its future. We investigate and record architectural and archaeological sites and landscapes across Scotland and care for more than 300 properties of national importance. We have a People Strategy which will be overarching strategy to which ensures we support and develop staff within the organisation.

Purpose of Job
To undertake the opening and daily operations of the College and assist with
maintenance duties in support of the college buildings and business park.

Major Tasks/Job Activities
1. Undertake routine checks of the College heating and hot water facility,
Monitoring the boilers setting via the Business Management System (BMS).

2. To liaise with specialist contractors and report/action any faults found to
Estates & Facilities Manager.

3. Ensure all areas are setup and maintained daily, and as required. Set up
corporate areas as required.

4. To assist with setting up college ICT equipment when required.

5. In consultation with the Estates & Facilities Manager liaise with contractors
and their representatives to ensure that health and safety standards are
addressed.

6. Oversee external contractors as directed by the Estates & Facilities Manager.

7. Liaise with and support the student body, and all staff with regards to the
operation and maintenance of the college buildings and services.

8. Represent the best interests of the College in internal and external meetings
as required.

9. As Deputy Fire Warden undertake and record weekly system test on the fire
detection system. Check all fire escape routes and for any tampering/faults
with fire safety equipment/alarms. Assist the Estates & Facilities Manager with
periodic fire evacuation drills.

10.Undertake out of hours duties on an established standby rota basis.

11.Act as the main key holder for the college and respond to any alarm
activations.

12. Monitor and set heating controls via the BMS system on a daily basis to ensure
heating plant and equipment is operating efficiently and effectively. Make
any adjustments as necessary under the guidance of the Facilities Manager,
reporting any faults or failure of equipment.

13. Ensure that boiler and plant rooms are kept clean and tidy and ensure no
flammable materials are stored there.

14. Monitor and manage the colleges door entry system, programming and issuing
door entry fobs as required.

15.Liaise with prospective Business Park tenants and monitor tenant lease
compliance and secure monthly meter readings from each unit.

16.Investigate issues reported by tenants and ensure, in conjunction with the
Estates & Facilities Manager, that they are dealt with in a timely and
professional manner.

17.Report to the Estates & Facilities Manager any maintenance and estates issues
relating to the college buildings, and business park.

18. To undertake any other appropriate duties as directed by the Estates &
Facilities Manager.

We are searching for a new Visitor Centre Supervisor to be part of something amazing in our local community.

Situated near the foot of what can arguably be classed as Scotland’s most iconic mountain, our highly regarded Ben Nevis Visitor Centre welcomes thousands of people from all over the world each year who come to tackle the big one.

The Centre provides important visitor information and guidance, drinks and snacks, souvenirs, and has touch screen facts and quizzes and short films to be enjoyed.

As Supervisor, you will be providing day-to-day supervision of colleagues and ensuring that you are motivating the team to deliver an excellent standard of customer care and presentation. Working closely with the Manager, you will be able to listen to feedback from customers and staff, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement. Furthermore, you will:

– Plan and maintain staff rotas;
– Assist the manager with exciting new projects, promotions and activity programmes.
– Order and manage stock for vending machines and the shop area.
– Act as a key holder and carry out health and safety checks.

To meet the seasonal needs of the facility it is anticipated that from March 1st – October 31st a maximum of 45 hours per week will be worked. The remaining hours will be divided equally over the remaining months November 1st – February 28th. You will have 2 consecutive days off per week. Salary will be paid in 12 equal instalments (based on 35hrs per week) to ensure consistent income for employee throughout the year.

– For the Supervisor, a salary range between £26,335 – £28,956 per annum.

We have an exciting and significant opportunity for an Active Travel Officer to join our Placemaking team in Falkirk or Glasgow. This position will play a pivotal and significant role in developing and implementing our Active Travel Strategy to ensure our towpath network across Scotland is accessible and enjoyable for walking, cycling, and wheeling.
