Scottish Canals are responsible for the management and development of five canals; we care for bridges, buildings, locks, The Falkirk Wheel, The Kelpies and 19 water supply reservoirs in locations across Scotland.  We are currently seeking cheerful, positive, and outgoing people to join our seasonal team.

You’ll be provided with all the training you will need to be safe and successful, and can expect to start out by being based within busier areas of our canal network.   You’ll be meeting and engaging with boaters and members of the public, sharing information, answering questions, and helping to keep the canal operating safely and efficiently.

Key Duties Include:

Operating locks and swing bridges (full training given)
Planning boat movements to move vessels through the canal as efficiently as possible
Assisting boaters and members of the public with information and enquiries
Operating mowers & strimmers
Carrying out minor maintenance works as directed
Maintaining accurate and timely records as required.
Assisting and supporting water management and water conservation

To be successful you will have:

Face to face customer service experience
Basic DIY and maintenance skills
The ability to communicate positively and effectively with other team members and boaters to support the efficient operation of the canal
Basic literacy and numeracy skills, including basic use of computers and smart phones
Health and safety awareness
A full driving licence and your own transport is essential

This role attracts an hourly rate of £12.13. You will work on a rolling rota which will include weekends and bank holidays.

We are looking for new team members to join us from Spring to Autumn 2024, working across a number of sites in the Fort William area. Weekly hours may vary.

Provan Hall is an A listed medieval building located in Auchinlea Park, which sits at the heart of Easterhouse. The building has recently reopened after a £2m restoration, offering a new hub for heritage learning and engagement, and as a visitor gateway to the Seven Lochs Wetland Park. Provan Hall Community Management Trust are responsible for the operation and management of Provan Hall and we are passionate about connecting local people and visitors with our hidden gem in the heart of Easterhouse, Glasgow.

This is a 6 month part time 17.5 hours per week role, due to begin in June 2024 and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. We welcome applications from people not currently in paid employment from ages 18+. We will work with you to design a work plan complete with training and guidance to reach your personal and professional development goals. No formal qualifications are essential but please read the person specification for each role carefully. A hybrid of working from home and onsite at Provan Hall is available but the frequency will depend on the role, tasks and projects assigned and we will plan a schedule with you to suit the role and your goals.

This role will explore all the features of running a tourist visitor attraction. From venue operations, merchandise to events. This role will offer a breadth of knowledge and experience, preparing trainees for managing visitor, heritage, arts and cultural attractions for future careers.

Tasks can include (this is not exhaustive):
Evaluating visitor access – identifying issues and resolutions to allow people from all walks of life to access and enjoy their experience at Provan Hall
Working with volunteers – assisting with scheduling volunteer tour guide timetables.
Marketing – seeking out opportunities and proposing new marketing strategies to attract national and international visitors
Events – managing bookings and organising community and commercial events
Merchandise – Monitoring sales, proposing merchandise stock, visual merchandising

Person Specification:

We are seeking someone to set excellent standards for the professional delivery of all aspects of Dovecot’s day-to-day activities, which currently include exhibitions, ticketing, retail, events, venue hire and catering. In so doing, the post holder will ensure a consistently high level of planning, organisation, marketing, quality control and excellent customer service to improve the overall visitor and client experience across the building and online, including the Tapestry Studio.

The Head of Commercial & Operations is a key member of Dovecot’s Senior Management Team with responsibility for running all commercial and visitor operations, developing business strategy, increasing income and setting excellent standards for the professional delivery of all aspects of Dovecot’s day-today activities.

Reporting to the Director, and working collaboratively with the Dovecot Senior Management team as well as with the commercial operations team, you will implement a strategy that delivers significant incremental growth. You will take full accountability for the successful delivery of sales targets; reaching and building new audiences, whilst ensuring that Dovecot’s brand values are maintained and strengthened. You will be responsible and accountable for the management of the Dovecot commercial operations team, ensuring that agreed levels of cost of sales and staffing, and agreed profit margins are met. The post holder is also responsible for supporting the Head of Finance & Resources to bring the buildings, technical and managerial infrastructure of Dovecot to the highest standards.

The person appointed to this post will be required to work flexibly. Dovecot operates over a seven-day week and is open to the public Monday until Saturday from 10am. On Sunday, except during the Festival period, Dovecot is closed to the public but available for events, meetings, courses and other activities. It is envisaged the post holder will work Monday until Friday including at least one weekend each month as duty manager but the demands of the Dovecot diary will require flexibility to ensure business needs are met, including working evenings and bank holidays.

Scottish Canals is looking for Holiday Boat Cleaning Assistants to join our friendly team at The Falkirk Wheel!

We are looking for passionate, enthusiastic, and motivated individuals to join our team and work with us over our Spring to Autumn 2024 season.

The Cleaning Assistants will assist with the interior cleaning of all Holiday Boats based at The Falkirk Wheel to the satisfaction of the Holiday Boat Manager.  This will involve general cleaning on a variable rota during the holiday season. 

Full uniform and training will be provided.

Key Duties Include:

All housekeeping duties e.g. cleaning kitchens, bathrooms, vacuuming & dusting.
Ensuring all inventory items are checked and replaced where necessary.
Rearranging bed layout and making up beds as directed and ensure all linen is in good condition.
Informing the Operations Manager of any defects that need attention.
Keeping the Operations Manager & Senior House Keeper informed of any issues as they arise
Any other duties as required to ensure efficient turnaround of boats.

Dundee Science Centre is looking for a proactive, forward-thinking individual who enjoys a challenge as well as working as part of an ambitious team.

The post holder will be hands on, ensuring all exhibits on the exhibition floor are fully functioning. You will be accountable for the operation, maintenance, repair, development and fabrication of Dundee Science Centre electronic, mechanical and electro-mechanical exhibits and equipment. The role requires manual handling and physical activity daily.

You will support the Facilities & Safety Procedures Lead to ensure all health and safety aspects are adhered to.

Main duties will include performing routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning, repairing, and replacing components to keep exhibitions operational, troubleshoot and address facility-related issues, such as plumbing, electrical and security systems, manage inventory of supplies and equipment necessary for facility maintenance and exhibition upkeep, provide technical support and training to staff members on operating and troubleshooting exhibition components as well as assisting the team with the transferring of equipment to and from outreach venues by driving the DSC van, to name a few.

Purpose of Job
To undertake the daily operational and maintenance duties in support of the

Major Tasks/Job Activities
1. Undertake routine checks and maintenance of the College heating and hot
water facility, Monitoring and managing the boilers setting via the Business
Management System (BMS).

2. To liaise with specialist contractors and report/action any faults found to
Estates & Facilities Manager.

3. Ensure all areas are setup and maintained daily, and as required. To set up
corporate areas as noted in the bookings diary.

4. To assist with setting up college ICT equipment when required.

5. To monitor and assist with maintaining the decoration and building fabric of
the College.

6. In consultation with the Estates & Facilities Manager liaise with contractors
and their representatives to ensure that health and safety standards are
addressed.

7. Liaise with and support the student body, and all staff with regards to the
operation and maintenance of the college buildings and services.

8. Represent the best interests of the College in internal and external meetings
as required.

9. As Deputy Fire Warden undertake and record weekly system test on the fire
detection system. Check all fire escape routes and for any tampering/faults
with fire safety equipment/alarms. Assist the Estates & Facilities Manager with
periodic fire evacuation drills.

10.Undertake out of hours duties on an established standby rota basis.

11.Ensure that all access roads, paths, and perimeter fences are maintained and
kept in a good state of repair.

12.Maintain all College plant, equipment, and furnishings.

13. Oversee external contractors as directed by the Estates & Facilities Manager

14.Liaise with prospective Business Park tenants and monitor tenant lease
compliance and secure monthly meter readings from each unit.

15.Investigate issues reported by tenants and ensure, in conjunction with the
Estates & Facilities Manager, that they are dealt with in a timely and
professional manner.

16.Report to the Estates & Facilities Manager any maintenance and/or estates
issues relating to the college buildings, grounds and/business park.

17.To undertake any other appropriate duties as directed by the Estates &
Facilities Manager.

Caerlaverock Castle is considered one of Scotland’s finest medieval castles, with its water filled moat, towers and unique triangular shape. The peaceful region of Dumfries and Galloway has many heritage attractions and you may also get the opportunity to work at some of these other sites.

The protection of Scotland’s natural and cultural heritage, its flora and fauna, and its landscapes and buildings is a core purpose of the National Trust for Scotland, driving activities across the organisation, and informing its identity as a charity, as well as the identity of Scotland and its people. All of these elements are fundamentally threatened by the impacts of climate change. As such, action in response to climate change is a central concern for the Trust.
This has been recognised for a number of years by the Trust and work has been taken forward including development of a Climate Change Action Plan, an adaptation assessment, renewable energy initiatives, climate risk modelling and energy reduction strategies. Unfortunately, some of this momentum was lost during the pandemic but the Trust has recently published a renewed commitment to mitigating and adapting to climate change within its published 10 Year Strategy which includes a target to be carbon negative by 2031. The Trust has also recently concluded an estate wide natural capital baseline assessment.
The Trust has been monitoring its environmental performance in compliance with ESOS and SECR reporting requirements. Planning and reporting against our carbon negative target will require the introduction of new policies, systems and approaches to be adopted across the organisation through procurement, people management and the management of buildings and land.

JOB PURPOSE

This job exists to:

Lead on policy, standards and guidance on environmental management and reporting ensuring the organisation is able to meet its target of being carbon negative by 2031 and be transitioning to be more resilient to the impacts of climate change.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Lead on development of climate and environmental management policy, standards, target setting and guidance.
2. Be responsible for reporting on environmental performance including ESOS and SECR and relevant internal performance reporting including key performance indicators and the annual report.
3. Be responsible for ensuring the organisation has sufficient systems in place to manage and report against environmental performance- notably carbon equivalent emissions, waste management, water and energy efficiency
4. Establish a new NTS forum for coordination of environmental management, performance monitoring and sharing best practice
5. Provide advice to property and national function staff on request and through production of briefings and contribution to project and strategy development
6. Act as the lead NTS contact for climate and environmental management issues with external bodies including Scottish Government, SEPA and Scottish Environment LINK, and other charities
7. Lead on relevant Scottish and UK Government consultations relating to environmental management issues
8. Line manage the Climate Change Coordinator and oversee development of the Trust’s climate change adaptation policies, plans and guidance.
9. Act as a key media spokesperson for NTS on environmental management issues contributing material to NTS communications
10. Contribute to the wider work of the department and the Trust as required

There are two roving steward positions available at Historic Environment Scotland, both Part Year Permanent positions. One is 4 days a week/part time, the other 5 days a week/full time (April-September). The likely start date for these roles is May 2024 (subject to pre-employment checks).

The post holders will be responsible for delivering the highest standards of visitor experience across sites in the Central Mid District. Reasonable agreed travelling is expected to cover sites within Stirling District, Perth & Kinross, Clackmannanshire and potentially further afield. A pool car may be available for this purpose.

The post sits within the Mid District of Central Region’s Visitor and Community (V&C) Team. The district is comprised of twenty-six properties, of which ten are staffed, including Doune Castle, Dunblane Cathedral, Castle Campbell, Elcho Castle, Huntingtower Castle, Inchmahome Priory, Loch Leven Castle, Meigle Sculptured Stone Museum, Stanley Mills and St Serf’s Church. You will be part of a team of stewards working across these properties and potentially others within the neighbouring East District (ie, the postholder will principally cover sites in Stirling District, Perth & Kinross, Clackmannanshire, and may be asked to cover Fife and potentially, but not usually, Angus).

Your duties may include transporting visitors by boat to the Island and operating a generator and water pump to ensure the island toilets remain working if working at Inchmahome Priory and Loch Leven Castle.

The successful candidates will support the teams at the properties in the mid district by covering absences such as annual leave, etc. The roles therefore offer variety and make a meaningful contribution to Scotland’s tourism industry and local economy by enabling the properties to open their published hours, as well as encouraging visits beyond the typical tourism destinations to the rural areas.
