To carry out, to completion, property maintenance related tasks (multi trade) to agreed timescales, quality standards and in a cost-effective manner; undertaking designated activities (trade specific) in managing the build and maintenance of all buildings, facilities and infrastructure owned by the RZSS. Ensure that all areas of the site are safe and well presented for our visitors in support of RZSS’ mission and vision.

Some of the things you’ll do:

Work under the direction of more senior tradesperson to take the day to day lead on designated activities (trade specific) to ensure all assigned repairs, projects and reactive labouring and driving tasks are delivered effectively, on time and to agreed H&S and quality standards.

Undertake all forms of general labouring works, e.g. planning general works and multi trade repairs (that don’t require an experienced tradesperson to complete) and repairs under the direction of appropriately qualified tradesperson.
Support the construction and maintenance of new buildings, facilities and infrastructure to agreed standards, budgets and deadlines, including smaller multi trade repairs or works, e.g plant, equipment and labouring tasks.

Drive company vehicles including pickup truck, off road ATV and fork lift truck and ensure maintained and road worthy and reporting repairs where required.

Operate heavy plant on a regular basis and ensure all machinery and tools are cleaned, inspected, maintained and user logbook updated daily to agreed transport and other policy standards and procedures and ensure all pre-start check sheets are completed as required
Assist in the ordering of supplies and services required for the team.

What we are looking for

Relevant construction qualification, or minimal 2 years’ experience of working on a hands on construction/maintenance role.
You’ll have a full driving licence.
Able to identify and make safe (for self, colleagues and the public) all the utilities and services encountered whilst working on RZSS sites.

Helping to maintain and operate our shows and rides and working in a small multi-skilled team of dungeon dwellers, you’ll be responsible for the maintenance of equipment, theming, rides, and the facility. Including carrying out electrical and mechanical inspection, maintenance activities and provide support to the daily operation of this thrilling attraction.

This naturally means you’ll be dealing with both routine maintenance and breakdowns and therefore you will work swiftly and with care to diagnose and resolve problems. Utilising your hands-on knowledge and experience you will sustain minimal downtime of rides and themed attractions for the visiting peasants.

You will also provide timely and regular communication to the Technical Manager regarding operational issues, ensuring the earliest possible resolution and displaying the ability to make sound decisions and take decisive action.

This is a permanent full-time role, which will include working weekends and bank holidays as required. Flexibility will be required as time and days of shifts will vary.

The role

To ensure safe electrical installations and undertake designated activities, related to your trade, for the maintenance and refurbishment of all buildings, facilities and infrastructure owned by the RZSS; to ensure that all areas of the site are safe and well presented for our visitors and in accordance with agreed service standards and in a cost-effective manner, in support of RZSS’ mission and vision.

Some of the things you’ll do:

Take the day to day lead to ensure all assigned repairs and projects are delivered effectively, safely, on time and to budget and recommend cost-effective opportunities to minimise the impact of its operations on the environment. Pro-actively inspect electrical installations and equipment to ensure standards are being maintained and is safe to use
To attend design team meetings with designers and other customers to give expert advise on infrastructure and facilities
To supervise sub-contractors of your own trade and ensure that they complete works to a suitable standard. Assist in arranging access for these sub-contractors and highlight any unsafe practices to senior management.
To be the responsible person for all electrical installations ensuring their day to day safety for staff and visitors.
Undertake all forms of Electrical works, e.g. new installations (heaters/hand dryer/large scale lighting) electrical fault finding and testing and partial re-wiring and be able to take the lead on an projects requiring electrical works including measuring up for materials and planning the works with minimal supervision.
Ensure all electrical plant, equipment, is inspected, maintained and documentation kept to meet relevant legislation and best practice standards at all times.

What we’re looking for:

Relevant City and Guilds certification or S/NVQ Level 3
Trained and competent on 17th/18th Edition test and inspection.
PASMA scaffolding certificate
Up-to-date knowledge and understanding of basic building related H&S legislation
The maintenance and construction of buildings and similar structures.

Thank you for your interest in the post of Grounds Maintenance Operator with Historic Environment Scotland based at Antonine Wall Depot. This is a permanent and pensionable appointment.

The Antonine Wall Depot Monument Conservation Unit (MCU) currently consists of an 8-person team all of which carry out grounds maintenance to a variety of locations. The unit is headed by a Works Manager who has line management responsibilities for the whole team. The MCU is responsible for the grounds maintenance to Properties in Care along the length of the Antonine Wall and to 6 outlying monuments in West Lothian.

The Antonine Wall MCU are also deployed throughout the South of Scotland as and when required where grounds maintenance or clearance work is required. You will be expected to work at any location as directed by the Works Manager. Although the depot is situated in Falkirk, official transport is provided to and from the various sites along the length of the Antonine Wall. Individuals are however expected to make their own way to the Antonine Wall Depot.

You will be part of the Grounds Maintenance team, responsible for the grass and garden maintenance, upkeep and presentation of the above monuments on a rotational basis.

The Education Manager is responsible for developing, delivering and evaluating the museum’s formal and informal learning programmes and events for all ages. This will include sessions with schools, families, community groups, adult audiences and volunteers both within the Museum and as outreach or digital engagement.
With experience of working in a similar capacity, the Education Manager is responsible for ensuring our learning and engagement programmes and events are accessible, innovative and dynamic for our target audiences. Working closely with the NMMST management team, the post will lead on strategic learning development, budgets, and associated high profile learning projects.

Key responsibilities:

• Lead and manage the National Mining Museum Scotland’s formal learning programme. Incorporating research, development and implementation of innovative content and programmes across our offer and ensuring all programmes align with our vision, mission and visitor needs.
• Work with partners and colleagues to facilitate learning opportunities which support the Curriculum for Excellence and provide life-enhancing experiences and reflect the Scottish Government’s performance framework outcome (Education) and Museums Galleries Scotland’s new strategy.
• Support schools, local attainment priorities and strategic learning programmes/projects through STEM, Learning for Sustainability, Global Citizenship, climate literacy, Health and Wellbeing and wider programmes, such as local history month, science weeks, topic specific projects, etc.
• Continue to develop the Museum’s green agenda and climate literacy opportunities in line with our masterplan and mission, vision and values and deliver green initiatives such as events and activities supporting the newly redeveloped family-friendly Green Zone exhibitions.
• Lead and manage the Midlothian Climate Beacon project, part of the Climate Beacons for COP26 nationwide partnership project, including participating in fundraising applications, facilitating public engagement activities and maintaining key partnerships
• Develop, plan and deliver educational activities, events, and programmes targeted towards the needs of children, young people and adults and maintain learning opportunities within the museum’s general offer and through our learning programmes that improve accessibility, support accreditation, and support a variety of learning styles, lifelong learning, and additional support needs
• Contribute to regular monitoring, evaluation and reporting of all educational and family activities, support NMMS forward planning and performance management processes (KPI’s)
• Collaboratively work with the Senior Management Team to plan and deliver a range of seasonal activities, events and exhibitions
• Work with the management team and front of house teams to continuously monitor and improve the visitor experience, to engage non-users of the Museum and work to improve accessibility, engagement and awareness of NMMS.
• Be responsible for the daily administration of the formal learning programme, including bookings, enquiries, coordinating resources and spaces in the museum, particularly the new Green Zone.
• Develop and maintain relevant digital resources to support learning.
• Market and promote NMMS formal and informal learning activities.
• Maintain and develop handling objects with NMMS curatorial department.
• Contribute to the development of external funding bids.
• Ensure accurate and secure management of budget, information and records, ensuring all are kept up to date, maintained and reported.
• Keep up to date with local, regional and national policies, strategies and initiatives for NMMS and develop key external relationships and partnerships
• Create and implement education programmes to achieve the highest standards of compliance with Health and Safety legislation, Child protection legislation, GDPR, Fair Work First and other regulations.
• Ensure that the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion are an integral part of the delivery of educational programmes and help to achieve Best Value.
• Represent NMMS at heritage education sector and Industrial Museums Scotland’s education and learning meetings and events.

Line Management
• The post has no direct line management responsibility but may be responsible for the coordination of sessional staff and/or volunteers and work experience placements.

You will have a relevant qualification and experience in electronic and software engineering, with 1st or 2nd line IT support experience (basic to intermediate PC/network troubleshooting). We have an exciting opportunity for a specialist Paintings Conservator to join our small, dedicated team of Paintings Conservators and Conservation Technicians.

You will have a sound knowledge of the history of art and the ability to undertake conservation and art historical research for paintings collections. You’ll be passionate about working with our diverse and exceptional collections. This role will help to deliver an ambitious exhibition schedule and a generous lending programme.

You must have a degree with a recognised post-graduate qualification in a relevant conservation discipline or equivalent training/experience. You will have proven practical experience of working with a broad range of art collections within the specialism of paintings gained post education/training.

You’ll be able to juggle several projects at any one time, be resourceful and above all, enthusiastic.

Excellent time management and planning skills with the ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines are essential.

The difference you’ll make

Reporting to one of our Senior Paintings Conservator, you will be part of the Conservation Department which includes other conservation specialisms of paper, frames, and time-based media. It’s a busy department, where everyone strives to keep abreast of recent developments within the wider profession and we encourage a culture of research and collaboration. We regularly process new acquisitions as our collection expands, and we provide baseline care across all the collection.

Your core activities will include:

Assisting with planning and programming paintings conservation work required to deliver the loans, displays, exhibitions, acquisitions, and collections care activities.

Recording work undertaken and liaising with colleagues to highlight any anticipated issues with the delivery of the work programme.

Undertaking conservation work required for exhibitions and displays of paintings, including at non-NGS sites.

Advising on the suitability of works of art for transport and display, condition checking, conservation treatments and application of preventive conservation measures.

Completing paintings conservation work required to improve standards of collections care, such as condition surveys of parts of the collection and remedial treatments.

Documentation – requesting photography, communicating findings, and providing data for entry onto our collections management database (Multi Mimsy) and our website.

Responding to any incident reports relating to paintings.

Liaising with colleagues to ensure works are safely packed and installed, which may involve designing specialist storage and display cases.

Undertaking art historical research relating to parts of our paintings collection, and conservation research relating to modes of deterioration, conservation materials and techniques.
